STOP PRESS: STREETSTOCKS AND STOCKCARS ARE COMING TO THE NOV 21 MEETING. Saturday, November 21 from 6pm it will be hard-out dust-kicking, tyre screeching, exhaust bellowing racing action at Central Motor Speedway in Sandflat Road off Highway 6 on the outskirts of Cromwell. This really will be a night of metal mayhem with the rare appearance of some 20 streetstocks from all over the South Island. Adding to the smashing spectacle a good field of stockcars will also be racing. There's also the expectation of good fields of 'Winged Demons' (an affectionate term given to sprintcars, speedway's most powerful and fastest class), saloons, six-shooters, productions and youth-ministocks.
If you're not in the know about speedway racing at Central Motor Speedway, this is fast-paced family entertainment. In fact, the fastest family show on earth. As soon as one class finishes and the winner has done his or her (yes, there are lady speedway drivers) victory lap waving the checkered flag, the next class is coming out onto the 500 metre avocado-shaped packed clay track. It's amazing to think that on a track this size, sprintcars reach and exceed 160kph. With their sophisticated space frame chassis and powerful V8 race motors saloons are no slugs either. Come to think of it, there's no such thing as a slow speedway class. Lightweight open wheeler six-shooters are pushed along by Commodore V6 motors, productions are powerful Subaru's and other makes stripped of all weight and even the youth-ministocks driven by 12 to 16-year-olds belt along at up to 100kph.

Remember, too, gates open at 4pm so you can get along early to your favourite in-vehicle viewing spot around the track.
