SPEEDWAY THANKYOU EXPERIENCE

Ever fancied being a thrill seeker and taking a speedway race car for a spin? Sitting in a sprint car? Being driven around the track by a race driver? That’s exactly what happened at the close of the racing season, as the Cromwell speedway club said thankyou to its sponsors, crews and volunteers.

“It’s all about having fun at the end of the season to say thanks to crews, sponsors and volunteers and giving them a go. It’s also about giving new drivers some training and young, aspiring drivers who are really keen a chance to experience what it’s all about,” says club committee member Whetu Taewa.

Whetu explains the club supplied everything needed for an exciting, safe and fun-filled day learning and experiencing the thrill of speedway.

Brothers Liam (18) and Taine (12) Ballantyne had been loyal volunteers at speedway throughout the 2021/22 season – and both are very keen to get involved in racing. Whetu says Liam got some basic training in a production car, and took to it immediately.

“It was just amazing,” Liam said, confiming he’s keen to enter the production class next season.

Whetu explains speedway is a great way for young people to learn not only better driving skills, but also valuable life skills. The club supports youth as the future of the sport.

“Our club policy is to hold a mini-stock race every meeting through the season, to give young drivers plenty of experience and learning opportunities. They learn driving skills, strategy and quick-thinking.”

Whetu says drivers must learn to handle themselves well both on and off track, so speedway is a positive sport for young people to get into.

The club’s mini-stock car was unfortunately not available for 12-year-old Taine on Sunday, but he got to check out a sprint car and rode along in the push truck. Whetu says the club will ensure Taine has a go in a mini stockcar before the start of next season in October.
