JANUARY 1ST: CROMWELL IS THE ONLY PLACE TO BE

 speedway event

Will Joel Myers Jr take the chequered flag, or will Kiwi drivers emerge victorious? Jan 1st holds the answer.

December 30th was a night of exciting racing across all grades at Central Motor Speedway, and the scene is now set for some unmissable New Year's Day speedway action.

It was Friday night. Spectators made the most of the Central sunshine, and people came from far and wide in numbers equalling pre-Covid levels to feel the roar, see the speed, and experience everything Cromwell has to offer.

The Stockcar and Ministock Tri-series was an epic battle with local driver Ashdyn Gable 88t showing consistency pays off in racing, as he won best pairs with Stockcar Tri-series winner Shanan Knight 29i. Central Speedway Club president Andy Erskine says the new generation of winners is definitely emerging.

“Ashton is achieving consistent results this season, with Trent Ainsley 5t placing second and Zak Phillips 21t a creditable third in the tri-series. A series like this gives young drivers the opportunity to travel to different tracks, race against a wider range of drivers, and really increase their skills.”

The Six-Shooter grade saw Faith Ainsley, another young driver, voted driver of the night. Faith drives well and finishes well with each race she enters, says Andy, and the award was well-deserved.

Spectators were also treated to some super-fast sprintcar action, with 16 year-old Joel Myers Jr having his first experience of the Cromwell clay – a track that has surprised many drivers before with its one-of-a-kind shape. Joel told us after racing that the central Motor Speedway track was something new for him.

"It was extremely exciting to race on, something I've never experienced in the USA, with its D-shape. It's a pretty cool track, how you can run both the top and the bottom. Racing the main event is going to be pretty awesome."

“Joel finished third overall,” says Andy. “The DNF cost him, and Adam Evans 98t and Daniel Anderson 44t grabbed the chance, racing to 1st and 2nd podium finishes.

“What Joel did, however, was give us all a glimpse of his brilliance, of what he is truly capable of. The Southern Sprintcar Series is going to be unmissable.”
